Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Merv attended college at Gonzaga University.  Merv first started coaching recreation teams during the 96-97 season and continued to coach recreation teams through 2004.  Merv became an assistant coach with a premier team in the KC area in 2003 and started coaching his own premier team in 2005.  He is the father of 2 soccer players.
